This month’s book club pick is The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner.
This novel connects the past to the present with awe. At the end of the 18th century stood an apothecary that secretly dealt poisons to women. Almost two hundred years later, a woman named Caroline discovers the truths to this apothecary after finding a vial in a London river. On a trip intended to let herself breathe from the troubles of her life, she embarks on a journey that changes her life.
Two hundred years prior, apothecary owner Nella is approached by 12-year-old Eliza. Eliza becomes a key component of this novel the second she walks into the apothecary. The day she entered the apothecary changed her life. Eliza and Nella share time getting to know each other through work in the apothecary, which turns out to be a longtime friendship. As their story ends, Caroline is able to piece it together, and Caroline and Eliza are connected through their journeys. This captivating novel shows what can change from the unexpected.
I really enjoyed this book – I had trouble putting it down towards the end because everything was super intense! I love the format of the novel as it switches between three narrators –it’s as if you are following three different stories that are all pieced together. I highly recommend giving this a read especially if you love a good mystery!
